Portes du Soleil is an alpine domain that spans across France and Switzerland. You can ski from France to Switzerland and vice versa. However, if you purchase a ticket from one of the French resorts’ websites, you must start your ski day from a French resort (and not from Switzerland).

The Portes Du Soleil domain has 208 lifts and 307 runs that cover 600 km of skiing. The domain has an altitude range of 900m – 2460m.

The slopes are suitable for all levels of skiers, with 39 green slopes, 130 blue slopes, 105 red slopes, and 33 black slopes. There are 30 snow parks, boarder-cross and ski-cross areas.

How To Buy Portes Du Soleil Ski Pass Online?

You will get a better price for your Portes du Soleil ski pass if you purchase it online rather than in person.

To book your ticket, you should visit the Portes Du Soleil website and click on “select your station” to choose the individual resort you wish to ski at or the resort where you will start your day.

Alternatively, I have listed all the links to the lift passes for each resort in Portes du Soleil.

  1. Abondance
  2. Avoriaz 1800
  3. Champéry
  4. Châtel
  5. La Chapelle d’Abondance
  6. Les Gets
  7. Montriond – purchase tickets from Avoriaz website
  8. Morgins
  9. Morzine-Avoriaz
  10. Roc d’Enfer, Saint Jean d’Aulps
  11. Torgon and Val-d’Illiez
  12. Les Crosets – Champoussin

Once you have navigated to your selected resort website, you must choose the type of ski pass you want: the entire Portes du Soleil resort or the individual ski area. For example, on the Chatel website, you can book the Chatel, a La Chapelle and Torgon pass, the Chatel Snow Park, or the beginner area.

Next, select your duration, whether you want to ski for 5 hours, the full day, the afternoon (only some resorts offer this), or multiple days. Then, you can select the day you want your lift pass to start.

The booking page allows you to choose your age bracket (child, teenager, young adult, adult, and senior). At this stage, you can choose if you would like to add insurance to your booking. The insurance costs EUR 3.50 and covers your mountain rescue if you need to be evacuated from the slopes due to injury.

Portes du Soleil Keycards

The final step is that you should ensure you add your digital pass onto a physical Keycard so you can access the slopes once you arrive at the resort. If you have skied at Portes du Soleil in the past, you will have received a hands-free Keycard.

Remember the exact card you used before, or attempt to remember it for next time so your details will be saved in your Portes Du Soleil account, and it will be quicker next time when making a purchase.

If you do not already have a hands-free card, you must pay €3 to buy one. The options for receiving your Keycard depend on the resort website you bought it from.

For example, with the Chatel website, you can collect the Keycard for free from a 24-hour collection point of your choice. There are a variety of locations available for you to choose on a map, such as the bottom of the Pierre-Longue chairlift.

Avoriaz offers home delivery for €3. Although, you must place your order at least eight days before you need the lift pass. There is also an option to withdraw the ticket from a Kiosk or a pick-up box for free.

Do not wait until your first day of skiing to pick up your Portes du Soleil ski pass. Try to do it the day you arrive so you can get straight on the slopes when you arrive.

Once you have received your order, whether it has been loaded online or picked up in person, you may enter the resort by the turnstiles. Place your lift pass in a left-hand pocket on your jacket. If your coat has a left outer arm pocket, this is the best place for you to put it.

How To Buy Portes Du Soleil Ski Pass in Person?

Pierre Longue ticket office Chatel - people buying Portes du Soleil lift passes
Pierre Longue, Chatel

When looking to purchase a lift pass in person, you can visit a ticket office at the base of the slopes. These kiosks typically have queues; hence, I recommend purchasing your tickets online.

In addition, there is a slight premium for buying your lift pass in person at Portes du Soleil Resorts.

However, sometimes you have no choice and must buy your ticket in person. The benefit of this is that you can speak to an agent, and they generally speak at least basic English, in case you have questions to ask about the lift tickets.

You will need to visit a Portes du Soleil lift ticket office to buy a lift pass for eight days or more, or you must show your ID to prove your age for a discounted ticket.

If you know you need to buy a Portes du Soleil lift pass in person, try to arrive 15 minutes before lift opening time. Lifts typically start at 8:45 AM, and the lift ticket offices generally open at 8:30 AM. By being the first in line at the ticket office, you can still be one of the first to take the lift and get the best snow conditions.

When buying your Portes du Soleil lift ticket, make sure you bring your Keycard if you already have one. Otherwise, they will make you purchase another one for €3 or CHF 4.

You also have the option to add insurance to your booking when purchasing your ticket in person.

Which Portes du Soleil Lift Pass to Buy?

A common question I notice is: “Should I buy a pass for just Avoriaz/Morzine or the whole of Portes du Soleil?”

By buying the Portes du Soleil lift pass, you can access all 12 ski resorts.

A benefit of this lift ticket is that you can ski throughout the whole ski territory and not worry about going into an area you do not have access to. You can even ski in Switzerland from France.

However, the Portes du Soleil ski pass is more expensive than an individual resort ticket, so make sure you plan to ski far and wide if you are investing in this higher-priced ticket.

The benefit of buying a ticket for an individual resort is that you will pay a cheaper price. This ticket can be good if you are learning to ski and want to conquer one resort before moving on to another. Or if you are nervous and want to get to know one resort well.

Additionally, buying a single resort is a good option for those who like to take it leisurely while on the slopes. For example, you may enjoy a few runs, get a coffee, ski a few more, and take a long lunch before heading back to the chalet. In that case, you may want to purchase a lift ticket for one resort because you will not cover much of the Portes du Soleil region.

A 5-hour Portes du Soleil lift pass counts from the moment you pass through a ticket gate for the first time. Fortunately, it does not start a 5-hour period from the opening of the lifts.

If you are staying in the Morzine/Avoriaz area, you could consider getting a 6-day pass for the Avoriaz area or Portes du Soleil. However, if you are a little further out at Bernex or Abondance for example, you may want to purchase your lift ticket each day depending on the snow or how much skiing you want to do.

If you are going on several trips to Portes du Soleil resorts throughout the season, you may benefit from buying a season pass, especially if you get a pre-season sale price.

If you buy a lift pass for eight days or more, including Portes du Soleil season passes, you must have your photo taken and added to your lift pass. You can get this done at the lift ticket office.

Portes Du Soleil Ski Pass Prices

The cost of a ski pass for Portes du Soleil depends on a variety of categories, such as age, duration, where you buy the ticket, and time of year.

Portes du Soleil Lift passes are less expensive when bought online rather than in person at the ticket office. Additionally, the Portes du Soleil region has price reductions from late March until the end of the ski season.

See Portes du Soleil website for full and up-to-date pricing.

Discounts for Portes du Soleil Lift Passes

It is unlikely that you will find a Portes Du Soleil ski pass discount code. However, there are methods for getting a Portes du Soleil ski pass discount. This usually involves pre-booking your winter lift passes.

Alternatively, deals are available for those able to book longer durations for their Portes du Soleil ski passes and for those visiting outside of the French school holidays.

Buying Online

As mentioned before, one of the easiest ways to get a discount on your lift ticket for Portes Du Soleil is by buying your ticket online.

There is a price increase for those who purchase their ticket same-day in-person for a Portes du Soleil resort.

Pre-Season Sales

Les Gets

If you have already booked your Portes du Soleil ski trip, you can benefit from a 15% discount on your lift passes if you book them in November before the ski season officially begins.

Nonetheless, this discount does not count for trips in the French school holidays, which generally include the Christmas and New Year period and the majority of February and early March.

Read more about the restrictions and inclusions of the pre-season sale on the Portes du Soleil website.

Longer Duration

If you know that you will be skiing at a specific resort for the entirety of your trip to the Alps, then you can be confident in buying a 6-day pass. This option will work out cheaper per day of skiing than purchasing a new ticket each day.

Ski on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Portes du Soleil offers a 20% discount for skiing on Tuesdays and Thursdays to promote more mid-week skiing outside of the French school holidays. However, the catch is that you must book it two weeks before your first day of skiing.

Ski on Saturdays

Some resorts offer a Saturday skiing discount. For example, St Jean D’Aulps has a Saturday skiing offer for only EUR26 per day, compared to EUR 34 on other days.

Other resorts, such as Les Gets, offer a weekend discount, where Saturday and Sunday skiing is cheaper when buying the weekend pass.

This discount is offered because Saturdays are typically less busy since it is the changeover day in the French Alps. Many people are travelling to or from the resorts, and consequently not skiing.

Blue Monday Sale

On Blue Monday, which in 2024 was on Monday 15 January, Portes du Soleil resort offered a discount on those skiing from 24 to 29 March.

The deal was six days of skiing for the price of 3. However, you could only book this offer from 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM on Blue Monday.

Family with Children

Finally, if you have children under five, you can get them a free Portes du Soleil lift pass.

Or you can book a family ticket with two adults and two children up to 19 and get a 10% discount. You need to show proof of relationship, for example – the same surname in IDs.

Portes du Soleil Ski Resort Opening and Closing Dates

For the 2025 to 2026 season, Portes du Soleil is open from 20 December 2025 to 19 April 2026.

However, individual resorts may begin or finish their season earlier or later than this date. So, visit the Portes du Soleil website to find the accurate opening and closing dates of resorts for summer and winter.

What is the Weather Like in Portes Du Soleil?

The best way to check the weather for Portes du Soleil is to look at the snow reports that show the forecast for the next six days. Here you can find the link to the Avoriaz snow forecast.

The other way to check the snow conditions in Portes du Soleil is to look at the webcams for each resort.

If you are skiing early in the season and there is not much snow, or even if it is too warm in Portes du Soleil, you can always check out Flaine in Le Grand Massif, which is nearby and at a higher altitude than Avoriaz. Find other resorts featured in my article on ski resorts near to Geneva.

Alternatively, if you are looking for other activities to do when the snow is limited, consider visiting Montreux or other towns on Lake Geneva.

Useful Information for Trips to Portes du Soleil

Alternatively, if you are staying in a car-free ski village such as Avoriaz, or an all-inclusive chalet with shuttle to the slopes included, you could book round-trip transfers.

Conclusion

You now have all the details on the Portes du Soleil lift pass—how to buy online vs in person, which pass to choose, closing/opening dates and key money-saving hints. Here’s what to do next:

  1. Decide your base resort and pass type. Will you stay in one resort (e.g., Avoriaz, Les Gets) or want full access to all 12 resorts across the France-Switzerland domain? Choose the pass accordingly.
  2. Book your lift pass online ahead of time. Buying in advance typically unlocks discounts, avoids queues and ensures your Keycard is ready on arrival.
  3. Arrange your transport and accommodation. Fly into Geneva Airport, rent a car (or reserve transfers) and book your chalet or hotel in the resort of choice.
  4. Plan your ski days and options. Map out how many days you’ll ski, which resorts you’ll visit, and what you’ll do on non-ski days (e.g., spa, walking towns).
  5. Gear up properly. Make sure you’ve got appropriate ski clothing, the right layering (see my guide), equipment hire (if required), and a plan for snow/weather contingencies.
  6. Explore companion articles for deeper planning.
