8 Unique Things To Do in Pioneertown, California (First-Timer’s Guide)

Pioneertown, located near Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree, was created to resemble an old west town for movies and shows. The purpose-built town was created in the 1940s by Hollywood actors and crew members.

Today, Pioneertown welcomes visitors as a unique destination where they can experience a taste of the Old West. With its charming storefronts and dusty streets, a trip to Pioneer feels like stepping back in time.

If you are planning a trip to the Joshua Tree or Palm Springs Area, read on to find out the best things to do in Pioneertown, California.

I visited Pioneertown twice during my time at Joshua Tree National Park.

The first time, it was grey and rained all afternoon, so I did not feel like I got the most out of Pioneertown. However, it was cosy and fun to eat in Pappy & Harriet’s on a rainy day. Additionally, the shops on Mane Street provided a welcome refuge from the wet weather.

When we returned for our second visit, it was beautiful weather, and I got a much better impression of the town. Not to mention – the photos we took were beautiful with blue skies.

All of these experiences have helped me to create this guide to visiting Pioneertown.

Quick Guide to Visiting Pioneertown

Where is Pioneertown?

Pioneertown is in the High Desert region of Southern California, just outside Yucca Valley. It’s about a 20-minute drive from Joshua Tree, 40 minutes from Palm Springs, and roughly 10 minutes from the centre of Yucca Valley.

How long do you need there?

Most people spend 1–3 hours walking along Mane Street, popping into the shops and grabbing a drink. If you’re planning dinner at Pappy & Harriet’s followed by a show, it becomes a relaxed half-day visit.

Is Pioneertown free to visit?

Yes. It’s free to wander around the town and explore the shops. You only pay for food, drinks, or any shows at Pappy & Harriet’s. Some businesses keep limited hours during the week, so don’t be surprised if it’s quiet.

When is the best time to visit?

Weekends are the best time to visit because more of the shops and studios are open, and the atmosphere is livelier. If you’re visiting in summer, go earlier in the morning or around sunset as the heat can be intense. In winter, afternoons are ideal when the day has warmed up a little.

Best Things to do in Pioneertown California

1. Eat at Pappy + Harriet’s

Pappy + Harriet’s is a famous music venue and restaurant. It has a rich history dating back to the 1940s when it originally served as a cantina for the actors and crew filming Western movies in Pioneertown. Over the years, it evolved into a beloved music venue and restaurant, attracting both locals and tourists with its vibrant atmosphere and live performances.

I recommend visiting Pappy + Harriet’s for lunch or dinner when visiting Pioneertown. But note – they do not take reservations.

Make sure to put your name on the list for a table at Pappy & Harriet’s when you first arrive and then you can explore the town if there is a wait time. They told us the wait could be up to one hour, but to come back in 30 minutes to see if there was a table available, and there was!

There is a large terrace for outdoor seating, which may speed up the wait time. However, there will likely be more people visiting on days with pleasant weather. When we visited the first time, it was heavily raining, so it was less busy in town and consequently in the restaurant.

The food at Pappy & Harriet’s was tasty. We loved the Mac & Cheese (go for the large portion if you are sharing between 2 people), and the ribs were a classic (a full rack fed 2 of us).

We also had a small coleslaw, which was tasty but not the best we’ve ever had, and we ordered fries, but the large portion was too much for us. You can order cocktails in a mason jar.

The atmosphere in Pappy & Harriet’s is fun and the restaurant and bar are decorated with moose heads and license plates all over the walls.

Pappy & Harriet’s is only open Thursday to Monday, so if you are visiting Pioneertown on Tuesday or Wednesday, you will need to find somewhere else.

2. Experience a Concert at Pappy & Harriet’s

If you visit Pioneertown in the evening, you can also watch a musical performance. This legendary venue has hosted renowned artists and bands from various genres since its inception, including Paul McCartney who played at Pappy & Harriet’s in 2016.

There is a list of all the bands and artists coming up on the live music page on Pappy + Harriet’s website.

You need to purchase your tickets online. Many performances offer a VIP experience (some with meet and greet) or a standing ticket.

Tickets to a music show does not guarantee you a table for dinner, so make sure you get on the waitlist when you arrive.

3. Have a Drink at Red Dog Saloon

If you are looking for somewhere to grab a drink while waiting for a table at Pappy & Harriet’s, or you fancy food in a different spot, try Red Dog Saloon on Mane Street. Those visiting on weekdays will be happy to hear that Red Dog is open seven days a week.

Red Dog Saloon also hosts free events on its outdoor porch. You can check their events page to see when the music starts and time it with your visit to feel the incredible atmosphere. 

Both Pappy & Harriet’s and Red Dog Saloon are open into the late evening and look fantastic when lit up at night, so Pioneertown is a great place to visit at this time of day, even if you are staying further afield in Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree or Twentynine Palms.

4. Go Shopping on Mane Street

Make your way along Mane Street to check out all the stores, which sell items ranging from vintage clothing, pottery, knick-knacks, and hand-creams.

I liked the products sold in Soukie Modern Outpost and bought a burnt orange baseball cap with Pioneertown written on it.

Soukie also sold a lovely-looking coffee table book that had some useful information about Joshua Tree National Park. I found the book on Amazon and it is called At Home in Joshua Tree. The book would make a great tool for researching before visiting the desert, but it also makes a memorable souvenir. 

There is a store that sells skincare products called XēBA BOTáNICA. You can try some samples and the store assistants are happy to explain some products to you.

Plus, there is the General Store that has an assortment of products, such as vintage denim, flannel shirts, sunglasses, pins, and patches.

There are a few fake store fronts along town that make good photo opportunities, such as the Likker Barn and the Bank.

5. Watch an Old West Re-Enactment

Look out for the Mane Street Stampede every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month at 1:00 PM in Pioneertown. The performances are weather permitting, so if the temperature is over 100 F or there is heavy rain, the performance will be cancelled – which is what we experienced.

You can discover more about the shows on the Mane Street Stampede website. Plus, there is a sign on Mane Street that will let you know when the next performances will be. They also claim they have a Facebook page, but it has not been updated since 2020.

There is also the opportunity to watch a re-enactment of a fight by a group called Gunfighters for Sale. The group typically do a 2:30 PM performance on one of the days on the weekend.

However, it is best to check their Facebook page for the most up-to-date information because they will let you know on the page if they need to cancel.

The performance is unsuitable for dogs, given that there will be gunshot noises.

6. Take a Photo of the Pioneertown Sign

Capture a quintessential snapshot of your visit to Pioneertown by photographing the iconic Pioneertown sign set against the backdrop of the desert landscape.

A sign is located at both entrances of the town and gives you an idea of what to expect in this old west town.

You can get a bit more creative with your photo than I did and take one with you in it. But be careful on the side of the road as cars are driving by constantly.

7. Walk around Pioneertown Motel

You do not have to be a guest of the Pioneertown Motel to see some of the highlights of the property. Two of my favourite photo spots in Pioneertown are surrounding the Pioneertown Motel.

The first is the Pioneertown Motel sign that stands tall as you enter from the car park. It creates a lovely frame if you wanted to capture a picture of you walking underneath it.  

The second is the motel office that is cute standalone building with some tall skinny cacti next to it.

Just make sure you stay off any private property.

8. Visit Pioneertown Film Museum

Learn more about Pioneertown’s role in the entertainment industry by visiting the Pioneertown Film Museum. The museum displays an assortment of memorabilia from films that were shot in Pioneertown.

Many of the movies and tv shows were from much before my time, so I personally am unfamiliar with any of them shot in Pioneertown. But you can still learn a bit about the movie and watch a clip on the tv in the museum.

It is small building that is free to enter, so you will not spend too much time in here. But it is still worth sticking your head in and having a walk-through.

When to Visit Pioneertown?

One of the main attractions in Pioneertown, Pappy & Harriet’s, is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, so it is best to avoid visiting Pioneertown on those days.

If you want to go shopping in Pioneertown, weekends are best, as some shops close on weekdays. For example, Pioneertown General Store is closed on Wednesdays, and Soukie Modern is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The shops do not stick to strict opening hours and usually open around 10:00 AM and shut around 5:00 PM or sunset.

Saturdays are the best day to be in with the chance of seeing a performance from The Mane Street Stampede or Gunfighters for Sale, which typically takes place between 1:00 and 2:30 PM.

Remember – Pioneertown is in the middle of the desert, so you do not want to visit in peak summer because it will be unbelievably hot. The Mane Street Stampede does not perform if the temperature is over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Therefore, the best time to visit Pioneertown is on the weekend in fall, winter, or spring. If you would like to do some shopping, visit during the day. If you would like to visit the bar or see a concert, come back to Pioneertown in the evening.

Where to Park for Pioneertown?

There is plenty of free parking in Pioneertown. You can find spots on either side of Pappy & Harriet’s, along Pioneertown Road or Curtis Road.

There is also a large car park to the left of Pappy + Harriet’s when you are standing on Pioneertown Road – you cannot miss it.

The car parking situation stretches far around the front and side of the restaurant, so there will be plenty of room for numerous cars. The rest of the town is within walking distance – except, the Pioneertown sign is slightly on the outskirts, so you may wish to drive to it.

Is Pioneertown Dog-Friendly?

You are allowed to bring your dogs to Pioneertown. There is a sign that states that Mane Street allows Foot n Hoof traffic only – meaning you could bring a horse through town too.

However, dogs must be leashed, and you should try to stay away from Pioneertown when there are demonstrations involving gun noises as this will frighten your pets.

There are goats in a pen along Mane Street and you can feed them from a little turnstile machine that dispenses goat food with the insertion of a coin. Just be sure to keep dogs back from the fence on the goat pen.

Pappy & Harriet’s only allow dogs in the outdoor portion of their restaurant, and you are not allowed to walk through the restaurant with your dog. You must bring the dog around the back. It is best to leave your dog at home when there is a concert that evening because of the flashing lights and loud noises.

Where to Stay in Pioneertown?

The only hotel in Pioneertown is the Pioneertown Motel. This motel is a unique lodging experience within the rustic charm of the Old West. Each room is designed with vintage decor and modern amenities.

The Pioneertown Motel is in a great location, particularly if you plan to spend an evening in Pioneertown and go to a concert at Pappy and Harriet’s. The motel is a short walk from the restaurant.

Some unique vacation rentals in Pioneertown are also within walking distance of the restaurants and bars. There are large house rentals with a pool that are great for groups of friends, or properties with hot tubs that would make a great base for a romantic trip.

Alternatively, if you plan to stay in the Joshua Tree area, you can visit Pioneertown on a day trip. Something important to note is that there is limited cell service in Pioneertown, so do not expect to be able to call an Uber or Lyft.

Pappy and Harriet’s website has a list of recommended taxi companies that you can use to pre-book a taxi. 

Best Things to Do Near to Pioneertown
