How to Create the Best Joshua Tree Itinerary

This Joshua Tree National Park itinerary was created from hours of research, plus my extensive trip to Joshua Tree to fact-check and enjoy the park.

This article will help you make your own Joshua Tree itinerary by providing you with information on accommodation, sights and attractions, and advice on how long to visit Joshua Tree.

Giant rock formations on desert landscape at Hidden Valley - a must for a Joshua Tree itinerary

Many people recommend spending the full day in Joshua Tree National Park, including bringing lunch to eat on a picnic bench. However, I highly recommend arriving at the park before sunrise and leaving after sunset.

As a result, you will need a rest at midday to recharge before returning to the park. Plus, park rangers state that the park is busiest from 10:00 AM and we saw evidence of this with a long line of vehicles entering the park at this time.

There are plenty of exceptional establishments you can visit for lunch in the area, such as Pappy & Harriet’s and La Copine. Then, you can have a chilled evening at your Airbnb by cooking at home, or you can experience some more local cuisine in Joshua Tree or Twentynine Palms.

Where to Stay in Joshua Tree National Park?

When planning your adventure to Joshua Tree National Park, choosing the right accommodation can significantly enhance your experience. While the park itself offers no lodging options, just like other parks such as Algonquin Provincial Park, the nearby towns of Joshua Tree and 29 Palms are convenient bases to explore the park.

The drive from the edge of Joshua Tree National Park to many hikes and viewpoints is around 30 minutes, so it will reduce your driving time by staying in this area.

  • Joshua Tree: Nestled just outside the park, Joshua Tree Town has a range of shops, hotels, and cafes/restaurants. Its proximity to the park’s most common entrance makes it a popular choice if you want a range of amenities.
  • 29 Palms: Arguably the better option for Joshua Tree National Park accommodations is 29 Palms because it is located near the quietest entrance to the park. Staying in this town can reduce your driving time to many of the park’s key attractions, allowing you to spend more time at the best parts of the park.

When it comes to specific lodging choices, here are a few recommendations:

  1. Holiday Inn Express Twentynine Palms: Positioned extremely close to the North Park entrance in 29 Palms, Holiday Inn Express has a strategic location if you are planning to get up early to catch the sunrise. With comfortable accommodations and essential amenities, it ensures a hassle-free stay, allowing you to maximise your time in the park.
  2. Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Twentynine Palms: This hotel looks more basic than the above hotel, but it is part of the Marriott chain, so you may prefer to stay here if you have Marriott status and like the familiarity of staying with this chain.

For those seeking a unique desert experience, consider:

There are also numerous luxurious holiday lettings close Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms. We loved the Airbnb we stayed in because it was so nicely decorated and spacious. However, it was a little far from a Joshua Tree park entrance.

How Many Days to Spend in Joshua Tree National Park?

I would recommend spending at least 2 full days exploring the park to fully immerse yourself in its beautiful landscapes and iconic attractions. However, if you are short on time, it is still possible to get a taste of the park’s beauty in just one day, albeit with a more condensed itinerary.

A typical visit to Joshua Tree spans around 3 days, making it an ideal long weekend destination. A weekend in Joshua Tree allows you to leisurely explore the park’s wonders while also indulging in the local dining and shopping scene, with popular spots like Pappy & Harriet’s, La Copine, and The Station.

If you are limited on time, these are the spots I highly suggest you include:

  • Hidden Valley Nature Trail
  • Cholla Cactus Garden
  • Key’s View
  • Cap Rock
  • Arch Rock Trail
  • Skull Rock
  • Jumbo Rocks
  • Hall of Horrors

What to Do in Joshua Tree National Park?

Joshua Tree offers a wide range of activities if you are an outdoor enthusiast and a nature lover. The best things to do in Joshua Tree National Park fall into these categories:

Hiking

Lucas on walking trail at Skull Rock & Jumbo Rocks - rocky formations with greenery

With pleasant autumn and spring temperatures, and striking desert scenery, Joshua Tree is a paradise if you love walking.

There are a variety of trails that range in distance, such as Hidden Valley Nature Trail (1 mile/1.6 km) which offers a view of massive boulder piles and rock formations, and the Ryan Mountain trail (3 miles/4.7 km), where a strenuous climb will reward you with panoramic views.

There are plenty of shorter trails to stretch your legs and see the stunning Joshua Tree scenery including:

  • Skull Rock Nature Trail (1.6 miles/2.7 km) – leading to Jumbo Rocks Campground
  • Arch Rock Nature Trail (1.1 miles/1.9 km)
  • Hidden Valley Trail (1 mile/1.6 km)
  • Cholla Cactus Garden Trail (0.1 miles/0.3 km)

These trails were ideal for me because they offered exceptional scenery while being relatively short, allowing me to experience multiple hikes in a single day at Joshua Tree National Park. I was able to capture the thrill of hiking without the commitment needed for longer treks.

Sunrise and Sunset

Joshua Tree’s clear skies and unobstructed horizons create incredible sunrise and sunset viewing opportunities.

Popular spots for sunrise and sunset in Joshua Tree include Keys View, Cap Rock, and Cholla Cactus Garden.

Rock Formations

Twisted, sculpted rocks are Joshua Tree’s trademark. Do not miss famous sites, such as:

  • Skull Rock
  • Arch Rock
  • Heart Rock
  • Jumbo Rocks
  • Hall of Horrors Slots
  • Intersection Rock
  • Cap Rock

Find out more about these recommended rock formations in this article on the best things to see in Joshua Tree.

Fauna and Flora

The Mojave and Colorado deserts meet in Joshua Tree, creating a unique ecosystem with fascinating plant and animal species adapted for these bizarre conditions, like the following fauna and flora below.

Plants

  • Teddy-Bear Cactus (Cholla)
  • Barrel Cactus
  • Joshua Trees
  • California Fan Palms

Plus, if you visit in spring, you can see an array of wildflowers (assuming the conditions were right throughout winter).

You can learn more about the different types of flowers on the National Parks website.

Animals

  • Coyotes
  • Tortoises
  • Lizards
  • Snakes
  • Scorpions
  • Tarantulas
  • Bighorn Sheep

If you are worried about encountering any of these creatures, you will be pleased to know that I did not see any snakes, scorpions, or spiders. Plus, if you were to encounter a tarantula in one of the most common places (Oasis of Mara or Split Rock) its sting is no worse than a bee’s.

We did see numerous coyotes one morning at around sunrise. Plus, we saw plenty of lizards.

Scenic Viewpoints

Keys View

Joshua Tree has numerous viewpoints providing sweeping panoramic vistas, such as Keys View (facing the Coachella Valley) and on top of Cap Rock.

There is no bad view in the park with the abundance of Joshua Trees, cacti, and huge rocks, so you will enjoy all the viewpoints along Park Boulevard, one of the main roads.

Stargazing

On clear nights, the park’s minimal light pollution offers amazing stargazing. Breath-taking views of the Milky Way are possible from many spots within Joshua Tree’s borders. The four designated areas for stargazing are in the car parks of Hidden Valley, Cap Rock, Quail Springs, and Ryan Mountain.

On your way out of the park near the Twentynine Palms entrance, you will find the Sky’s The Limit Observatory and Nature Centre which often offer programs to learn about the dark sky.

What to Do Near Joshua Tree National Park?

There is no shortage of sights and activities to enjoy in the areas surrounding Joshua Tree National Park.

Here is a guide to some of the top attractions to experience outside Joshua Tree National Park.

1. Joshua Tree Town and Twentynine Palms

These small towns near to the North Entrance Station are great places to stock up on supplies, grab a meal, or explore local shops and art galleries.

Look out for the giant figurine outside The Station.

2. Joshua Tree National Park Visitor Centre

Before heading into the park, make a stop at the Joshua Tree National Park Visitor Centre. The main visitor centre is in the town of Joshua Tree.

Here, you can gather information about park trails, wildlife, and geology. You can also get trip-planning advice and safety tips from the rangers.

If you did not already buy a park permit online, or own the National Parks pass, you can purchase a Joshua Tree permit. It is possible to buy your permit at any of the entrances to Joshua Tree National Park, but it will save time by buying it before at a visitor centre if there is a queue, or if you are heading into the park before the rangers are at their posts, for example at sunrise.

3. Pioneertown

Step back in time with a visit to Pioneertown, a unique Wild West-inspired town, originally built as a movie set in 1946. Today you can still wander the dusty streets lined with frontier-style buildings, grab a drink at the saloon-themed Pappy & Harriet’s, and even catch a live musical performance.

Pioneertown is a vibrant town on the weekend, but many of the shops and restaurants are not open on weekdays, so plan accordingly.

Discover more tips in my essential guide to visiting Pioneertown.

4. Palm Springs

About an hour’s drive from Joshua Tree, the city of Palm Springs offers a complete change of scenery, perfect for a day trip. Explore art galleries, go on a palm-tree-lined hike, or check out the quirky architecture in its residential neighbourhoods.

You can also take a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway for panoramic views of the Coachella Valley but take a jacket as it is much colder up there.

Where to Eat Near to Joshua Tree National Park?

There are no restaurants or shops in Joshua Tree National Park, so if you will be inside the park during mealtimes, you will need to either bring food for a picnic or venture out of the park to a restaurant.

The most famous, and for good reason, restaurants in the area are La Copine and Pappy & Harriet’s. Although these restaurants are not in the towns immediately outside Joshua Tree National Park, they are worth the extra drive to get to them.

It is possible to make a reservation at La Copine by sending them a text (or an iMessage if you are international). However, the reservation typically gets you to the top of the waitlist, as we still had to wait for a table when we arrived, but they provided us with a complimentary drink while we waited.

We were seated at the bar in front of the kitchen, and it was so fascinating watching the kitchen team work on their tasks. The food at La Copine is exceptional, in particular the Shrimp Roll and the Chicken Piccata. We were also lucky enough to get one of the last servings of their doughnuts.

Pappy & Harriet’s is an institution and a rite of passage when visiting Pioneertown. The food was great, but it was not the best place for I visited during my whole trip to California. However, the fun atmosphere and excellent décor make it worthwhile.

We ate the rest of our meals during our Joshua Tree trip at our Airbnb; therefore, for more restaurant recommendations in the Joshua Tree area, check out this article from the LA Eater

Tips for Visiting Joshua Tree National Park

Here are some practical tips to help you make the most of your visit to Joshua Tree National Park:

Stay Hydrated

Bring along an insulated water bottle to keep your drinks cool throughout the day, and consider carrying an extra one, especially if you plan to spend long hours exploring. There are no water refill stations within the park (or running water of any kind), so you must bring all the beverages you will need for the day.

Although, you can refill your water bottle at the West Entrance Station in Joshua Tree Village.

Restrooms

There are vault toilets (non-flushing) at all campgrounds. Many trailheads start at campgrounds, so you can get situated before starting a hike. There is no hand-washing station, so pack some hand sanitiser.

Maximize Your Permit

A JTNP permit is $30 per vehicle, so make the most of it. If you arrive later in the afternoon, pick up your permit at the visitor centre and head right in to catch the sunset. Even if you are checking out of your accommodation early to leave Joshua Tree, you can go to the park for sunrise or a quick hike. Most people visit Joshua Tree for 3 days, and the permit lasts 7 days, so try to get your money’s worth.

However, the cost of this permit felt like great value to us, especially compared to Indian Canyons in Palm Springs which cost $12 per person.

Park Entrances

Be prepared for long queues at the park entrance, especially during peak hours. Consider entering through the 29 Palms gate as it tends to be less crowded. Gates are manned from 7:00 AM, but you can enter 24/7. If planning an early start, ensure you purchase your permit at the visitor centre the day before. They will check your permit when you exit, so make sure you have one.

We must have passed 50 cars on our way out of the park from the Joshua Tree gate at 10:30 AM. I never saw a long line when leaving or entering from the 29 Palms entrance.

Car Rental

If you’re renting a car to travel to Joshua Tree, opt for a regular vehicle as e-vehicles are not suitable for exploring the park. It’s best to rent from larger locations like LAX airport to ensure availability and variety.

Smaller rental shops may have limited options and restricted operating hours, as we experienced in Anaheim. If the shop shuts at 5:00 PM, you need to make sure you arrive well before that time because their systems shut off immediately and cannot process any more pick-ups.

Download Offline Maps

Prepare for limited or no cell service within JTNP by downloading offline maps ahead of time. While sporadic 4G or cell service may be available, it’s best to have offline maps to navigate the vast wilderness.

Here are some items that were essential during my Joshua Tree trip.

Conclusion: Planning a Joshua Tree Itinerary

For accommodation, staying close to Joshua Tree’s park entrances reduces your travel time and allows more time to explore. While both Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms have suitable options, 29 Palms is the quietest entrance.

The Holiday Inn Express Twentynine Palms is a good choice for its location near the park entrance and amenities, especially for those wanting to arrive early to see the sunrise, which is a must.

Plan for at least two full days to thoroughly explore the park and some surrounding areas. However, even one day is worth it for a glimpse of Joshua Tree.

Key attractions include Hidden Valley Nature Trail, Cholla Cactus Garden, and Arch Rock which have some of the best scenery in Joshua Tree National Park. Get involved in some activities such as hiking, stargazing, and viewing sunrises and sunsets.

if you have time, visits to Pioneertown and Palm Springs are highly recommended.

There are no restaurants within the park, but La Copine and Pappy & Harriet’s in nearby towns provide good dining options though they require some extra driving.
