Kauai in 3 Days: What to See When You’re Short on Time
Kauai is one of the most magical destinations in North America, so it deserves to receive your maximum attention. However, for some people, only 3 days in Kauai is achievable because you may be combining Kauai with other Hawaiian Islands.
It is possible to explore Kauai in 3 days, but you need to be willing to wake up early and fill your days with as many activities as possible.
While I was able to visit Kauai for much longer than 3 days, I know the places and activities that cannot be missed. You will discover all the places I would return to if I had the chance, or the places that you have to see on your first time on Kauai.
It is also possible to book a resort with a swimming pool and spend the whole time relaxing, but the flight time to Kauai is far. Therefore, I believe you should become deeply acquainted with Kauai if you are making the effort to travel to Kauai.
3 Day Kauai Itinerary
This is a perfect Kauai itinerary if you have limited time because it will assist you in seeing as much of Kauai as possible in a limited period.
It is recommended to segment the things to do in Kauai into the four corners of the island. This will mean you will spend each of the three days in Kauai on a different shore.
This 3 days in Kauai itinerary assumes that you will arrive in Kauai on Day 0 and depart Kauai on Day 4. It will be challenging and may not be worthwhile visiting Kauai for less than this duration.
One thing to remember about visiting Kauai is that the weather can be unpredictable, and some excursions or activities can get called off due to inclement weather. Therefore, there is a chance that during your 3 days on Kauai, you may experience some disruption.
Keep in mind – there is a higher likelihood of cancellations during winter in Kauai. Or research when the best time to visit Kauai is.
In the Kauai itinerary that follows, there are several options to choose from for each day to create your 3 perfect days in Kauai.
Day 1 – West Kauai (Koke’e, Waimea Canyon, Na Pali Coast)
Morning
Start your day early with breakfast from Passion Bakery Café, Kountry Kitchen or Java Kai in Kapa’a. These places can get busy, so I suggest going as soon as they open.
You can put your name on the waitlist for Kountry Kitchen to save waiting for a table when you arrive.
Then, proceed to the Koke’e State Park, where you will spend the morning.
The drive will take around 1 hour and 30 minutes from Kapa’a to Pu’u O Kila Lookout, the furthest point of your day.
Another benefit to starting the day early at Koke’e Park is that the cloud coverage becomes thicker as the day goes on – so you will get the best view early in the day.
There are several hiking options to choose from today; however, you must start your day very early to fit in one of these hikes – it is not possible to do them all.
Plus, you should consider your abilities and if you will be able to complete the hikes in the suggested timings.
The first optional trail is Pihea Trailhead to Alakai Swamp (4 hours, 12.4 km or 7.7 miles) – where you will see Kilohana Lookout.
The views from Pu’u O Kila Lookout and Kalalau Lookout are already impressive, so there is no pressure to hike this trail to see the scenery. You can also hike just the first mile to get an impressive view of the trail.
The second optional hike is the Waimea Canyon Trail to Waipo’o Falls Trail (2 hours – 4.8 km or a nearly 3-mile round-trip hike).
This hike can get muddy after it rains, so ensure that you wear your waterproof hiking boots.
During this hike, you will see more of Waimea Canyon State Park, which many people state resembles the Grand Canyon.

Afternoon
After a busy morning, leave the parks and head to Porky’s Kauai to grab lunch. This restaurant is close to the departure point for Na Pali Coast boat tours.
This afternoon you have the option of a Na Pali Coast boat tour or a helicopter tour of the island.
For your scenario, the afternoon boat tour is best combined with a morning exploring the state parks (due to the usual cloud coverage).
For Kauai helicopter tours, the best light and flying conditions are early mornings or late afternoons.
If you choose the Na Pali Coast cruise, rather than the helicopter, you will travel past Polihale State Park to the Na Pali Coast.
An early dinner is served on the boat. But remember to take your motion sickness tablets an hour before you set sail so you do not feel unwell. You can learn more about my experience with sea sickness in my guide to the Na Pali boat tour.
If you are still hungry after the boat tour, grab an extra snack from Puka Dog or Bubba Burgers on the way home.

Day 2 – North Shore Kauai (Princeville, Hanalei Bay, Haena, Kilauea, Kapa’a)
Next up on this Kauai 3 day itinerary is a visit to the spectacular North of Kauai.
If the Kalalau Trail is on your bucket list, arrange it for day 2. The parking or shuttle passes can be booked online thirty days ahead of your preferred date. Tickets go online at midnight Hawaii time and sometimes sell out within minutes.
The suggested route for the Kalalau Trail is from Ke’e Beach to Hanakapi’ai Valley. It takes around 3 to 4 hours round-trip and is 6 km or 3.7 miles. It is also possible to hike only to the first overlook (1-mile round-trip), but a reservation is still needed to access the park.

Morning
Alternatively, you can enjoy a lovely day trip to the North Shore beaches, such as Tunnels Beach, Hanalei Bay, Haena Beach, Puu Poa Beach, and Anini Beach.
If you can manage it, go for a visit to Tunnels Beach before breakfast. The parking fills up quickly for Tunnels Beach, so it is best to arrive early to ensure a spot. Also, visit Haena Beach for some spectacular photo opportunities.
Next, drive back to Hanalei Bay and park at Black Pot beach parking. Walk to town and admire the scenery around you. Get breakfast from Hanalei Bread Co. or Trucking Delicious (closed on Saturdays). Then enjoy a walk along Hanalei Bay Beach and the pier.
If you are ready for a snack, visit Wishing Well Shave Ice or JoJo’s Shave Ice and try this local Hawaiian delicacy. If open, purchase some taro doughnuts from Holey Grail (check the Instagram page if travelling during winter for the current opening hours).
On your way from Hanalei to Princeville, stop at Hanalei Valley Lookout for a quick photo stop. The view is remarkable here, but there are only spots for a handful of cars, so you may need to return later.
The best way to discover the pristine Princeville is to walk from the Foodland parking lot to Puu Poa Beach (if you decide not to hike the Kalalau trail).
The walk will take around 40 minutes each way. It is also possible to drive this route slowly, admiring the view from the windows. There is a small car park at Puu Poa Beach.
Afternoon
For lunch, you could return to Hanalei Bay and eat at Tahiti Nui – the famous restaurant from the George Clooney film, The Descendants.
Check the opening hours work for the day you visit since it is only open for lunch on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. If you are in the mood, order the famous Mai Tai. Some say it is the best Mai Tai on the island.
Otherwise, you could try Tiki Iniki, in the same lot as Foodland, for some fun-themed cocktails. However, the food is better at Tahiti Nui.
After lunch, it is time to start heading towards East Kauai. On the way, stop at Anini Beach to swim with turtles (hopefully). Again, parking is limited here, but you may be able to wait for a little for a spot to free up.
Continuing further east, you will pass the town of Kilauea. It is worth it to visit the Kilauea Lighthouse; however, you need to reserve a slot ahead of time online. Plus, check the opening hours since the Lighthouse is closed on Sundays.
Keep on driving back to Kapa’a and return to your accommodation for a rest. Depending on the time, you may be able to visit one of the nearby East Coast Kauai beaches, such as Lydgate Beach, for some snorkelling.
For dinner, this evening, go to Lava Lava Beach Club and enjoy the live music. You do not need to make a reservation, but you should show up early to get your name on the waitlist.
Overnight in Kapaa (suggested accommodation: Waipouli Beach Resort or Pono Kai)
Day 3 – South Shore and East Kauai (Poipu Beach, Shipwreck Beach, Lihue/Wailua)
Morning
For your last full day on Kauai, you will get an opportunity to see more of East Kauai and explore the South Shore.
Wake up early to see Hawaiian Monk Seals on Poipu Beach or Shipwreck Beach. Then, order breakfast online, in advance, from Little Fish Coffee in Poipu, or visit Anuenue Café or Lava’s on Poipu Beach.
The next activity is the Mahau ulepu Heritage Trail. Park at Shipwreck Beach for free and follow the sandy coastline that follows alongside the Poipu Bay Golf Course.
Assuming you turn back as the trail merges with the golf course, the trail distance is around 6km round-trip (4.7 miles). There are many photo opportunities along the trail, so keep your camera handy.
It can get hot along the Maha’ulepu Coastal Trail; therefore, you may find yourself ready for a swim afterwards. The water is generally too rough to swim at Shipwreck Beach; instead, drive to Poipu Beach to swim, surf, or boogie board.
However, you should wear water sandals or water shoes as there is a rocky surface in the water.
Afternoon
For lunch, you could order food from Puka Dog, Bubba’s Burgers, or Koloa Fish Market.
Use this opportunity to purchase some souvenirs from shops around Poipu and Koloa, such as the Shops at Kukui‘ula. There is a limited choice of souvenir shopping at Lihue airport.
This afternoon, you can choose between three activities: Kipu Ranch, Secret Falls, or the Kuilau Ridge hike. All these options offer a different type of exhilaration.
Pick Kipu Ranch for a 4×4 off-road experience around a privately owned ranch.
You will see some familiar locations from movies, such as Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones. The vehicles fit up to four people, and the tour permits two designated drivers per vehicle.
The Ranch Tour is usually sold out at least a month in advance, so you should book your excursion 2 or 3 months before your Kauai vacation. It is a highly recommended activity.
The next option for this afternoon is the kayak and hike to Secret Falls. It is another incredible way to see Kauai up close and personal. The kayak takes around 45 minutes one way, and the hike takes approximately 25 to 30 minutes each way.
You will have to wade through knee-deep water during several river crossings. So, water shoes like Tevas or Keens are essential – as discussed in my list of things to pack for Kauai.
You can arrange a tour to Secret Falls or rent a kayak from a local vendor. Be aware that you cannot rent equipment or book a tour to Secret Falls on the weekend.
The last option for this afternoon is a hike along the Kuilau Ridge Trail, which will take approximately 3 hours and is 5.7 km or 3.6 miles. This hike will take you through a remarkable forest reserve with lush greenery.
If you are travelling to Kauai with children and want a family-friendly activity to do this afternoon, then book the leisurely Fern Grotto boat tour.
On your way back from Poipu to Kapa’a, you could also take a 20-minute detour to see Wailua Falls. However, if time does not permit, it can be missed since it is such a short stop for a photo.
This evening for dinner, choose from dining at JO2 or Hukilau Lanai – both upscale dining experiences. Alternatively, if you have never been to a Luau, you should book to see Luau Kalamaku or Smith Family Garden Luau. Buffet dinners are an optional add-on to a luau.

Where to Stay in Kauai with 3 Nights?
Kapa’a (also known as the Coconut Coast) is the recommended location to stay for short trips to Kauai.
Kapa’a is considered the mid-point between the two furthest points of interest on Kauai; Koke’e State Park in the west and the Ha’ena State Park in the north.
There are also some well-priced (and some luxurious) accommodations, plenty of food outlets (casual and fancy), as well as beautiful beaches at your doorstep.
Consider booking accommodation at the following options.
Coconut Coast Accommodation

How to Get Around Kauai?
It is not possible to get around Kauai without a car. You need to rent a car from the airport to properly explore the island.
Public transportation is limited, and the Uber and taxi networks are unreliable.
I recommend reserving your rental car as soon as you have booked your flights given that the demand for car rentals are high and prices can increase dramatically.
Therefore, you should book your rental car with Hawaii Discount Car Rental as soon as you have booked your flights. Car rental has free cancellation, and the price usually increases as your trip start date approaches.
Kauai is a rough circular-shaped island with a ring road around the outside connecting the towns. However, the Northwest part of Kauai is inaccessible except by boat and hiking.
It is possible to drive only from the north of the island clockwise to the west.

Tips For Visiting Kauai in 3 Days
Wake-up With the Roosters
If you talk to anyone who has been to Kauai, they will tell you all about the chickens. There are many chickens and roosters, and they will wake you up in the morning with their crow.
Therefore, the best advice for Kauai is to stick to an early bedtime and then it will not be so hard to wake up in the morning.
Most visitors to Kauai operate on this same schedule because there is no real nightlife on Kauai. If you are concerned about the roosters, you can bring some earplugs.
Alternatively, fewer chickens were roaming around Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa (on inward-facing rooms); compared to a rented house in Princeville, where they roam freely.
A Car is Essential
Given that a car is required to travel around Kauai, the demand for a car is extremely high. Therefore, you need to book a rental vehicle as soon as possible.
When you arrive at the Kauai airport, have part of your group wait for the suitcases, and have the other half go straight to the car rental shop. Lines for car rental pick-up can be extremely long, so you want to try to get ahead of other travellers on the same flight as you.
Segment the Island into Four
This 3-day Kauai itinerary has already been prepared for you. So, if you follow it exactly as-is, you do not need to worry about how to organise the itinerary.
But if you want to freestyle during your visit to Kauai in 3 days, you should consider trying to do activities and sights in a similar geographic location altogether.
For example, Waimea Canyon Lookout and Na Pali Coast boat tours work well together. Additionally, Kalalau Trail and Hanalei Bay are convenient when visiting on the same day.
Make Reservations in Advance
This statement goes for both restaurants and activities. Try to book activities and dinner tables as much as possible before arrival on Kauai.
It helps to avoid disappointment when you only have three days on Kauai, plus everyone else is doing it – so you must be as organised as others.

Remember to Pack These Items
- Hiking boots – if you want to do some of the suggested hikes from this Kauai plan, you must wear walking boots. Kauai’s rugged terrain has no time for old sneakers without grip. You will end up throwing away your white trainers before leaving Kauai.
- Moisture-wicking activewear – each day, you will either be wet from sweat, swimming, or the rain. So, wear clothes that can keep up with your activities.
- Reef-safe sunscreen – Hawaii has created a rule that all sunscreen used on the islands must be reef-safe, not just reef-friendly. You can buy some on Kauai or purchase some before you go from Amazon.
- Long-sleeved dark clothing – if you have chosen to do the Kipu Ranch activity, visit Allerton Gardens, or a helicopter tour, long dark clothing will be helpful. You should wear dark colours for the helicopter tour to avoid glare on the windows. Plus, dark-coloured clothing is best for ATVs to minimise stains from mud. Long sleeves are handy for repelling the insects at the botanical gardens.

How Many Days Do You Need in Kauai?
When deliberating how many days in Kauai for a vacation, it is essential to consider where you are travelling from and how long the travel time is to get there.
Three days on Kauai may be enough if you combine Kauai with Maui, Oahu, or another Hawaiian island. However, if you are looking for the optimal time to spend in Kauai – 7 to 10 days is recommended.
For those wondering how many days to spend in Kauai, I would recommend 7 days in Kauai as a minimum if Kauai is the only destination. Especially, if you travel from the East Coast of North America or internationally.
Nonetheless, ten days in Kauai gives you enough time to explore, relax, and have time for any unexpected cancellations or inclement weather scenarios.
Conclusion
Exploring Kauai in just three days may seem ambitious, but with careful planning, you can experience the island’s stunning landscapes, outdoor adventures, and rich culture.
By dividing your itinerary into different regions each day, you will maximise your time while seeing Kauai’s must-visit sights, from Waimea Canyon to the Na Pali Coast and the perfect beaches of the North Shore.
First-time visitors or those short on time will get a well-rounded introduction to Kauai’s beauty, but if you find yourself wishing for more, you will know exactly where to return on your next visit.
If you can afford to spend longer than 3 days in Kauai I would recommend it, given that you will not have enough time to do all the activities you may want to.
However, if you are already visiting another Hawaiian Island, you could do a quick tour of Kauai and see as much as you can in 3 days.
The nearest cities to Kauai, not in Hawaii, are Los Angeles and San Francisco, and the flights take around 6 hours. Therefore, you want to ensure your long journey is worth the long travel time.
