10 Days in Kauai: The Best Itinerary When Staying in Kapa’a
After years of designing custom travel itineraries professionally and planning my own trips around the world, I can confidently say that 10 days in Kauai is the perfect amount of time to experience the island’s highlights without feeling rushed.
This 10-day Kauai itinerary is designed for travellers who want to stay in one place rather than split their trip between multiple hotels. It is based in Kapa’a, on Kauai’s east side, which gives you a central base for exploring the North Shore, South Shore, Waimea Canyon and the Coconut Coast.
Changing accommodation mid-trip can eat into valuable holiday time, and for some travellers, unpacking once simply makes the trip feel more relaxed.
Kapa’a works especially well for this style of itinerary because it has beaches, restaurants, food trucks and scenic stops nearby, while still being within reasonable driving distance of most of Kauai’s main sights.
This itinerary is based on my own experience visiting the island, combined with my background as a professional travel designer.
I’ve spent time fine-tuning this route to make it practical, enjoyable and realistic, with enough structure to help you plan your days but enough flexibility for Kauai’s changing weather.

Why Base Yourself in Kapa’a with 10 Days in Kauai?
Kapa’a is one of the most practical places to stay if you want to explore Kauai from one base. It sits on the east side of the island, which makes it easier to reach the North Shore, South Shore, Waimea Canyon and Coconut Coast without changing hotels halfway through your trip.
This works especially well for a 10-day Kauai itinerary because you have enough time to take day trips across the island, while still returning to the same accommodation each evening.
It is a good option if you prefer a relaxed travel style, want to unpack once, or are staying in a condo where you can cook some of your own meals.
You’ll also be close to beaches, restaurants and food trucks along the Coconut Coast, which makes evenings easier after a full day of exploring. For specific places to eat, read my guide to the best restaurants in Kauai.

If you only have a short trip, I would usually recommend staying somewhere central, such as Kapa’a or Lihue, rather than moving accommodation during a few days in Kauai. You can read my 3 days in Kauai itinerary for a shorter version of this trip.

Day 1 – Arrival in Kauai and Check-In in Kapa’a
Pick up your car rental at Lihue Airport. The line for car rentals at Kauai airport can be long, so send your driver to pick up the car while your other passengers wait for the luggage.
If you are hoping for a lei on arrival at the airport, you will need to arrange it yourself.
For East Shore accommodation I recommend:
- Pono Kai Condos – well-situated apartment rentals in Kapa’a
- Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort – Luxury beachfront resort in an accessible location
- Timbers Kauai Ocean Club & Residences – Ultra-luxurious residences near Kalapaki Beach
If you are looking for a classic beach resort, you may prefer staying in Poipu, where there are more resort-style options. Kapa’a is better for travellers who want a practical central base, with a good selection of oceanfront apartments and condos with pool access.
Depending on the time of your arrival, you can stop for lunch at one of the food trucks in Kapa’a. There is plenty of parking near the food trucks. If you were looking for a sit-down but still casual meal, you could go to Duke’s in Lihue.
For those staying in a self-contained apartment, you should pick up some groceries. There are many options for supermarkets in Kapa’a so you will not have to travel far.
After a busy day of travelling, you are free to explore the area or enjoy a relaxing afternoon at the beach.
Given that you may be jetlagged by a couple of hours (or much more), go for an early dinner at Lava Lava Beach Club. This was one of my favourite casual restaurants on the island, and I’d happily recommend it for an easy first-night dinner.
There is live music at Lava Lava Beach Club starting at 5:00 PM, which will help keep you entertained and stay up for longer. No reservation is needed – but go early to get your name on the waitlist.

Day 2 – Waimea Canyon and Na Pali Coast
I recommend doing the biggest bucket-list activities early in this Kauai itinerary.
The weather can be unpredictable, so you should get your must-do activities accomplished early or have time towards the end of your Kauai itinerary to try again.
Therefore, early this morning you will be heading to Koke’e State Park and Waimea Canyon.
Start the day with a hike from Pihea Trailhead to Alaka’i Swamp (4 hours, 12.4 km or 7.7 miles). You will also see Kilohana Lookout.
The drive from Kapa’a to Pihea Trailhead is over 90 minutes. The earlier you get to the state parks, the better due to increased cloud coverage throughout the day and parking spots. Also, you want to have enough time to do everything you had planned.
After the hike, stop at the Waimea Canyon Lookouts. You will have a chance to come back another time to see the lookouts if the views are too cloudy. Then, I recommend having lunch at Porky’s Kauai because it is close to your next stop, plus the pulled pork sandwiches are delicious.
This afternoon you will embark on a sunset boat tour along the Na Pali Coast. The tour will start at around 2:30 PM and a light dinner is served on the boat.

Day 3 – Wailua River Kayaking and Beaches
This morning you will not have to travel far for your first activity – kayaking down the Wailua River. You can also book a guided tour, but I liked the sense of adventure in attempting the hike to the Secret Falls without a guide.

After a tiring morning, you can head across to the food trucks in Kapa’a. It is very close to the kayaking, so it is a convenient next stop. There is a lot of choice, so you are guaranteed to find something everyone in your group likes.
I enjoyed Da Melting Pot and my brother loved Chicken in a Barrel.
The rest of the afternoon is free for you to spend on the beach. You could visit Lydgate Beach to go snorkelling.
There is also the option to book a helicopter tour or there is time in case you need to reschedule the Na Pali Coast boat tour. This is common during winter in Kauai.
Keep your evening open tonight for cooking at home or finding a walk-in restaurant nearby.

Day 4 – North Shore Exploration
Today, it is time to visit Kauai’s North Shore. The drive is just under an hour to get to your starting location of Kalalau Trailhead; thus, you will need an early start. Make sure you have brought a packed lunch.
You will need to book your Hāʻena State Park entry and shuttle or parking permit in advance if you plan to hike from the Kalalau Trailhead. You can read more about booking tickets for the Kalalau Trail here (scroll to Day 8).
After hiking the Kalalau Trail, stay in the area and enjoy the beaches such as Tunnels Beach, Haena Beach, and Ke’e Beach. When you think of Kauai, you will often see images of Tunnels Beach because it is so beautiful.
After a muddy and sandy morning, head to Hanalei Bay Beach where you can use the public showers to wash your feet and legs. You can also change into fresh clothes ready for dinner.
Visit Tahiti Nui for an early dinner this evening (no reservation needed). It is relatively casual, so you do not need to dress too fancy for this dinner. Just make sure you are not in wet swimwear or dragging sand into the restaurant.

Day 5 – Kipu Ranch Adventure
Get ready for a thrill with a Kipu Ranch Tour starting at 9:30 AM. Make sure you book in advance and come in dark clothes with long sleeves.
You may wish to get lunch from the Kapa’a food trucks again or head to Lava Lava Beach Club if you can get cleaned up after this adventurous excursion.
After freshening up at home in Kapa’a, travel to Poipu Beach to look for turtles before sunset. You can also see the Spouting Horn.

Then, enjoy a spectacular dinner at Beach House. Arrange your dinner for just after sunset so you can watch the sun go down with your pre-dinner drinks. We had dinner as the sun was setting, and I kept running outside to take photos.

Day 6 – Enjoying Poipu
Today you will be returning to explore more of Poipu. Make sure you drive through the Tree Tunnel as you approach Poipu.
Start at Shipwreck Beach or Poipu Beach before breakfast to look for seals on the beachfront.
Grab some breakfast from Poipu, such as Little Fish Poipu. However, you may have to order online to avoid the large queue that Little Fish often gets.
Next up, you should hike the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail. The benefit of doing it in the morning is to avoid the midday heat.
The Maha’ulepu trail was one of my favourite trails I did on Kauai because the views are incredible along the coast and it wasn’t difficult, so the whole family could enjoy it.
Stop for lunch at Bubba’s Burgers. I love the teriyaki and pineapple burger. You can also wander around the shops in Poipu to pick up some souvenirs.
On your way home, have a quick stop at Wailua Falls. It doesn’t need much more than a quick stop, so you can miss this if you are tired from a busy day.
This evening you should arrange to have dinner at JO2 in Kapa’a. It is another local Kapa’a spot, so it will be convenient that you don’t have to travel far this evening.

Day 7 – Sugarloaf Farm Tour and Free Afternoon
Start your morning with breakfast from Passion Bakery Cafe – you may need to call ahead to order as it can get busy and sell out. Make sure you try the Malasadas they are famous for.
Today is a good day to add a slower, pre-booked activity to your Kauai itinerary.
One option is the Kaua’i Sugarloaf Pineapple Farm Tour near Kilauea, where you can learn about Kauai’s white Sugarloaf pineapple and taste fresh pineapple from the farm.
Tours are currently limited to selected days and times, so check the latest schedule before finalising your itinerary and pre-book your tour in advance.
A week into your Kauai itinerary, you have some flexibility to see if there are things you have already done and want to repeat, or that you want to squeeze into your vacation.
Therefore, you could leave the afternoon open to reschedule your Na Pali Coast cruise or for a helicopter tour.
When it rains heavily in Kauai, you may have to rearrange your day, but there are still plenty of things to do in inclement weather.

Day 8 – Sleeping Giant, Fern Grotto and Luau
After several bigger driving days, use today to enjoy the area around Kapa’a rather than heading across the island again.
Start with the Sleeping Giant East Trail, one of the most convenient hikes if you are staying on Kauai’s east side.
It is a 5.64 km hike but rated as “hard” due to some steeper scrambling portions. So, this trail is best for adults without any mobility issues.
If you want something easier, you could spend time relaxing around the Coconut Coast, or keep the day free in case you need to reschedule a Na Pali Coast boat tour or helicopter ride.
This afternoon would be a great time to book a Fern Grotto tour – you can combine it with the Smith’s Family Garden Luau onsite. It is only a 10-minute drive from most Kapa’a accommodation options, so it is easy to include in your trip.
The Smith’s Luau does not operate every night, so check the seasonal schedule to make sure you can work your itinerary around it.

Day 9 – Back to the North Shore
I recommend heading straight for Anini Beach for an early morning swim to look for turtles.
If you did not manage to visit Tunnels Beach on your last trip to the North Shore, you can also use this as a chance to get this epic beach ticked off your bucket list.
You can enjoy the remainder of the morning in Hanalei Bay, playing or relaxing on the beach and walking around the town. Pick up some shave ice from Jojo’s Shave Ice or Wishing Well, and some doughnuts from Holey Grail.
On your way out of Hanalei, make sure you stop at Hanalei Valley Lookout. There are only a few spots to park immediately in front of the lookout, but you can also park at the large Foodland car park and walk over.
As you continue your journey back towards East Kauai, visit Kilauea Lighthouse (you need to book time slot tickets).
Alternatively, you could hike the Kuilau Ridge Trail. It is a 6km hike that will take you round 1.5 to 2 hours and is moderate in difficulty.
There are some amazing views on the Kuilau Ridge trail, but expect some mud – so wear your hiking shoes.
Book dinner at Hukilau Lanai tonight. It is a local restaurant that should be easy for you to walk or drive to.

Day 10 – Departure
Check out of your accommodation this morning and have an early lunch at Pono Market (depending on your flight time).
I recommend eating before you arrive at the airport because there are limited options and the service can be slow.
What to Book Now
If you’re following this itinerary, I recommend booking accommodation in Kapa’a, ideally through VRBO, where you’ll find everything from beachfront condos to comfortable family homes.
